Guide to medicine
On the Endeavour, there will be many, many things that want to make you and everyone you care about dead. Here, you'll learn about the secret art of helping people flip off the Grim Reaper.
Phase 1:Diagnostics
Before you can start healing people, you first need to know exactly what needs to be healed. Depending on your Job and Skills, there are various ways you can do this:
- Observing: You can examine people by either Shift+Clicking them, or right-clicking them and clicking "Examine". This will tell you if they're bleeding, if they have any open or non-bandaged wounds, and if they have burns that need to be salved. You can also look if they're Vomiting (Caused by Poisoning and Radiation), Balding/Sloughing off Skin (Radiation), or Gasping (Oxygen Loss, Pierced Lung.) Psionics with the Redaction Faculty can also use their Skinsight power by touching someone on help intent.
- Grab-Examining: You can grab someone using the Grab Intent, and then use the Grab on them on Help Intent to examine the limb you grabbed closely. This will tell you if they're suffering from Ailments, Arterial Bleeds, or Broken Bones. Doing this on the patient's head will also tell you if they have Cirrhosis (Caused by Liver Damage) or Blue Lips (Caused by Oxygen Loss).
- Health Analyzer: Just click on someone to use this. You need a Medicine Skill of Basic or higher to use it properly. (Insert image of scanner readout here.) You can also use it in-hand to read the last scan you made, and even print it. Let's break down the information the Health Analyzer gives you:
- Brain Activity: The healthiness of the brain. It has 6 states:Normal, Minor Brain Damage, Weak, Extremely Weak, Fading, and Dead. Once it reaches Dead, the Brain (and by extension the person) is dead. Brain damage is caused by Oxygen Loss (Caused by Blood Loss,Pierced Lungs, or Lack of Breathable Oxygen) and Toxins.
- Pulse Rate: The BPM of the Heart. Normal rate flucutates in the 60-80 range. Higher Heartrate can indicate Severe Pain, which can lead to cardiac arrest, or Heart Damage.
- Blood Pressure and Oxygenation:Blood Pressure is a rough estimate of how much blood the heart is pumping around a person, with normal values fluctuating around 120/90, with lower values indicating Heart Damage, Blood Loss, and/or Cardiac Arrest. If the Blood Pressure is too low, medicines won't be able to flow through the body. Blood Oxygenation gives you a percentage of oxygen the blood is transporting to the brain. If it reaches 85% or lower, the Brain starts dying, faster as it goes down. Low Blood Oxygenation is caused by Oxygen Loss and/or low Blood Pressure.
- Body Temperature:The temperature of the body. Normal Temperature is at around 36.95 C per Humans (unless they wear prosthetic limbs, which raise the normal temperature by a few degrees), and at 20 C per Unathi. Higher Temperatures can indicate an Infection.
- Radiation: How much Radiation Exposure a person has suffered.
- Specific Limb Damage: Tells is you which limbs suffered Traumatic Injuries, Burns, or are Bleeding. It also tells you if a person has Broken Bones or Bleeding Arteries, but it doesn't specify where. If a person's limb has Irreparable Traumatic Injuries or Burns, it means that limb will always have Arterial Bleeding and will have to be Amputated.
- Reagent Scan: What Chemicals a person has flowing through their Blood or in their Stomach.
- Body Scanner: These are stationary scanners that you can find in the Infirmary, in the Perseverance, and in the Spirit. You need a Medicine Skill of Experienced or Higher to use them correctly. They give you more info than the Health Analyzer.(Insert image of Body Scan here.). You can use the Push Scan to Display button to make the scan appear on a screen above the Operating Tables. Let's break down the extra information the Body Scanner gives you:
- Blood Volume: How much blood is inside a person.
- Oxygen Deprivation: The severity of a person's Oxygen Deprivation.
- Genetic Tissue Damage: The severity of a person's Genetic Tissue Damage, which is caused by either Slimes or Radiation Exposure.
- Antibody Levels: A person's immune system. Lower levels can be a sign of Infection.
- Body Status: Location of Arterial Bleeds, Broken Bones, Extraneous Objects (such as Bullet Shrapnel), and Infections on Limbs, as well as the Health of Organs, and whethever they're Decaying or Necrotic. A Necrotic Organ will have to be replaced. Here's what each organ does:
- Brain: What makes a person a person. If it dies, the person is dead.
- Stomach:
- Lungs :Allows a person to breathe oxygen. A damaged lung will cause Oxygen Deprivation.
- Liver: Protects the person from Toxins. A sufficiently damaged liver will release Ammonia in the Bloodstream, damaging all other organs.
- Kidneys: Helps a person process liquids. A person with damaged kidneys will have toxins in the bloodstream if they drink anything.
- Heart: Pumps blood through the body. A person with a damaged Heart will have a lower Blood Pressure, and could even go in Cardiac Arrest.
- Appendix: Serves no purpose. Sometimes it suffers appendicitis, and will have to be removed.
- Eyeballs: Allows a person to see. A person with damaged eyeballs will have difficulty seeing, and will eventually go blind.
Phase 2: Treatment
Now that you've diagnosed the patient's problems, all you need do is administer the correct treatment. To do so, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the Equipment you'll use to deliver said treatments:
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Bandages | Gauze Bandages and Bruise Packs. Used to stop Bleeding and help Traumatic Injuries heal. |
| Advanced Trauma Kits | Advanced version of Bandages. Helps Traumatic Injuries heal faster than Bandages. |
| Ointment | Ointment for burns, used to help burns heal faster and prevent infection. |
| Advanced Burn Kits | Advanced Ointment. Helps Burns heal faster than Ointment. |
| Splints | Allows you to immobilize broken bones. You need an Anatomy Skill of Basic or Higher to use them correctly. |
| Autocompressor | Gives a patient CPR automatically. It won't restart the heart by itself, but it'll give them enough Blood Pressure for the medicines to flow through the body. To use it, remove any Suit the patient is wearing, and click on their chest with the Help Intent. Note that if you don't have an Anatomy Skill of Basic or Higher, you'll break their ribs. |
| Autoinjectors | Injects 5u of chemicals in a person's blood. Has to be refilled with a syringe once spent. |
| Syringe | Allows you to draw and inject chemicals, as well as to draw a person's blood. You need a Medicine Skill of Basic or higher to use them on a patient. |
| Pills | Contain chemicals that can be administered orally by targeting the patient's mouth (or just giving them the pill to eat). Can also be dissolved in water, or attached to an IV drip or roller bed to inject intravenously. |
| Dropper | Allows you to squirt chemicals in a patient's eyes, or exposed organs. |
| Roller Bed | Allows you transport a patient faster than just grabbing them. You can also attach Blood Packs or Pills on them, and then connect them to the patient by click-dragging the pack to them. |
| IV Drip | Allows you to attach a Blood Pack or Pill to them, and then to a patient to inject their contents intravenously. |
| Cane | Allows a patient with a broken leg to walk without jostling the bones. |
| Wheelchair | Allows a patient with broken bones to move without jostling them. |
| Operating Table | An Operating Table with an in-built Neural Suppressor:Simply click on it to instantly anestheticize the patient. |
| Vitals Monitor | Continuously monitors a patient's Pulse Rate, Brain Activity, and Breathing. To connect a patient to it, click-drag the machine to them. |
| Sleeper | A machine that continuously gives a patient a basic health analyzer scan, and allows you Inject and Spray chemicals from tanks installed inside it. It also allows you to give a patient Dyalisis and Stomach Pumps, which will remove Chemicals from the Blood and Stomach. |
Now that we know what tools we will use, we can finally pass on to treatments: This table lists all the treatments for each affliction. Remember, it's up to your judgement in which order they should be given - usually, surgery should be prioritized if needed, and thus getting a patient alive to a Body Scanner is your number one priority.
| Problem | Treatments |
|---|---|
| Bleeding and Physical Trauma | Inject Inaprovaline to slow the Bleeding. Apply Bandages or Advanced Trauma Kits on the affected limb to stop the bleeding. Give Patient Tricordrazine or Bicaridine. (Note:These medicines will also close Surgery Wounds, so be careful.) |
| Burns | Apply Ointment or Advanced Burn Kits on the affected limb. |
| Infection | Give Synaptizine to the patient, and apply a Ointment or Advanced Burn Kit on the affected limb. |
| High Pulse Rate | Give Inaprovaline to stabilize the heartbeat. Give a Painkiller to reduce pain. Use surgery to repair a patient's heart. |
| Low Blood Pressure | Give a patient blood with an IV Drip, or by clicking on a roller bed with a blood pack, then connecting the blood pack to the patient. Use surgery to repair the heart. |
| Low Blood Oxygenation | Give Inaprovaline to the patient to prevent Brain Damage from Low Blood Oxygenation. Fix a patient's Blood Pressure. Give a Patient Dexalin or Dexalin Plus to supply artificial oxygen to the bloodstream. Turn a patient's internals on, and set the tank's pressure to 60kPA for an artificial lung. Use surgery to repair the patient's lungs. |
| Arterial Bleeding | Bandage, Inject Inaprovaline, and splint the affected limb to slow the bleeding. Use surgery to fix the Arterial Bleed. |
| Broken Bones | Splint the affected bone to stop it from jostling during movement. Give the patients Painkillers to stop the pain. Use surgery to fix the Broken Bone. |
| Cardiac Arrest | Put an autocompressor on the patient's chest to automatically give the patient CPR (Note:This won't restart the heart, but like normal CPR it will give the patient some Blood Pressure - enough for the medicines to work.) Give a patient CPR manually by clicking on them (Note:This has a low chance to succeed, and won't fix Heart Damage or Pain.) Use Painkillers to stop the heart from going into arrest again. Use a defibrillator on the patient. Use Surgery to repair the Heart. |
| Brain Damage | Give a patient Inaprovaline if it's Minor. Give a patient Alkysine (Note:They will be dizzy while the medicine is in their Blood.). Use Surgery to repair the Brain. |
| Poisoning and Liver and Kidney Damage | Keep a patient dosed on Dylovene to prevent further damage caused by the toxins, and to heal minor to moderate Liver Damage. Use the Dyalisis and Stomach Pumps function of the Sleeper to remove toxins from the Blood and Stomach (Note:Remember to Empty the Beaker in the sink when it gets full.) Use Surgery to repair the Liver and Kidney. |
| Eye Damage | Apply Imidazoline directly on the Eyes with a Dropper. (You don't need them be have an open incision or to be on a surgery table to do this, just aim for the eyes and click on them with the dropper.) |
| Decaying Organs | Apply Peridaxon directly to the Organs with a Dropper. |
| Genetic Tissue Damage | Ask the admins for help lmao |
